In every curia a chancellor is appointed whose principal function, unless particular law establishes otherwise, is to take care that the acts of the curia are gathered, arranged, and safeguarded in the archive of the curia. He or she is the chief archivist of a diocese’s official records. Also a notary and secretary of the diocesan curia, or central administration, he or she has a variety of other duties. As Chief Operating Officer, he/she is responsible for overseeing the day to day administrative and operational functions of the diocese for the successful implementation of the overall diocesan mission administration. It is the highest diocesan position open to women.
