ORLANDO | The third scrutiny for the Elect will occur this Sunday, April 6. The reading is that of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead, where He reveals Himself as the resurrection and the life.
This last scrutiny occurs as a final, deepened awareness of sin, in order to uncover, heal and strengthen the Elect as they prepare for their initiation into the Church at Easter Vigil.
The Scrutinies are a good time for the faithful to look into their own hearts during this season of penance, so they may make a good confession and prepare joyfully for Easter Resurrection.
Director of Worship at the Diocese of Orlando, Bruce Croteau explains, “Perhaps the greatest evangelization is our example. On the night before He died, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and said, ‘Do you realize what I have done for you? … I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do’ (Jn 13:12). The example He gave us is our gift to the Elect. Lent, while it does include internal spiritual disciplines, propels us outward. This was the journey of Jesus during His 40 days in the desert. May it please God to be our journey as well.”
