Parish Nursing is a recognized subspecialty of nursing by the American Nurse Association. They are described as Health facilitators, health counselors and health educators. As such, they are able to assist parish members through health consultation and program development. There are no “hands-on” treatments such as giving medications or changing dressings. Specific liability insurance is available for parish nurses. In promoting the health of their congregations, parish nurses seek to minister to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the community in the caring, compassionate manner of Christ. They are dedicated to promoting wellness in the community through education, advocacy and support for all people. Parish health ministries provide a connection between a holistic approach to health and a person’s faith. The Office of Family Life and Pastoral Care is coordinating information about parish nursing.
